Why
It works because it provides leverage. Most dogs are faster and more agile, many are stronger then their owners. A rule of thumb as far as strength is to use a ratio of 3:1 for size. In other words if the dog weighs 80 pounds, because it essentially has four wheel drive and a lower center of gravity, it would in human terms be closer to 240 pounds. With some breeds the factor is 4:1 or 320 pounds. Now you understand a little better why you are having trouble controlling your dog. It's simple physics. The answer as to why it works is simple physics as well. If the collar you're using does not provide you the leverage you need to control your dog, let alone get it's attention, you don't have a hope of teaching it to exert self control. If your dog is stronger, faster and more agile then you then controlling it is impossible. If your dog is stronger, faster and more agile then you and it knows it teaching it to exert true self-control is impossible. The first step in teaching a dog anything is to even out the playing field and the Wade Collar does this beautifully.
There are other collars that work, for instance the much more expensive Gentle Leader™ works very well due to the force the dog must avoid that is applied to its cervical vertebrae. Outside of the risk of injury sudden or accumulative, on the whole dogs really seem to dislike them, trying to rub them from their faces. (Do a Google search for 'gentle leader rubbing face" and you'll get just short of 20,000 hits), they really seem to take the fun out of training for the dog and many just sort of slump into depression when they have to wear them. Prong/Pinch collars work well on many dogs and while they do look worse than the actual force they apply many people find them unpalatable. Every client I've ever had that had been using a prong collar switched to a Wade Collar because the results were simply better and the dog tolerated it better as well. There are harnesses that run under the dog's "arm pits" that give them a bit of a pinch when the dog pulls. The effect seems to wear off after a while with most dogs.
The truth is that no one collar is going to be the solution for all dogs but the Wade Collar works in more cases then anything I've ever seen because it simply provides a more even playing field

There are many different types of dog collars; flat buckle collars, chokers, face halters, prong/pinch collars, electronic static collars, various harnesses all which apply some level of force intended to help the dog owner control their dog. Proponents for all of these collars have an argument as to why their collar is more humane then the others when the reality is for any one of them to work they must apply some degree of force or the dog is simply going to ignore it and continue on its merry way. Many people equate the word force with 'inhumane' usually when referring to someone else's product or training style. There are inhumane ways to train a dog but applying intelligent leverage to teach is not one of them.
